Artist Profile by Alicia Green

Donna in Snake in Fridge was one of the most difficult roles I have ever taken on. Not to mention that this was one of the strangest plays to just read. Donna is so simple, yet so incredibly complex. She was sexually abused by her brother, and is left mentally retarded. When I first delved in, this is sort of how I played her. The creepy retarded girl. At our first reading, our director, Blake Bradford, pointed out that she isn't so deadpan. I went back, and I saw so many moments of her. Just her. Not as the retard. Not just as the ghost in the house. Rather, she was the sane, normal girl struggling to live and to make people see the truth. She is beautiful, truthful, insightful, funny, caring and so many other things. Playing her I felt myself grow as both an artist and a person. She challenged me. To keep things simple. To take things slow. This was not a role to be glossed over, but one to be tackled. She was the voice of reason and the comic relief in a play so driven by sexuality and horror. This is not easy. When I stopped acting, and starting being and started having fun embodying this wonderful character, it really came alive. I feel proud to have been a part of such a dynamic play and feel so honored to have had the chance to play this incredible woman.
